My MDE Experience
Just Wanting to be a Part of the Team
I have worked as an Executive Administrative Assistant to the Chief Information Officer at a higher education institution in Maryland for about seven years. The field of Information Technology was new to me. I felt comfortable facilitating the administrative needs of the department. However, I knew I was capable of adding more to the department. I wanted to be able to engage intelligently in technical conversations and add a layman's perspective to the various initiatives and projects. As I reviewed the UMUC graduate program offerings, I knew distance education would be the missing link that could strengthen the departments' mission. I recently completed my B.S. in Business Administration. As the first person in my immediate family to earn a degree, I felt the momentum from that experience and decided to pursue a career in distance education.
First step: Master of Distance Education.
Distance Education
Early on in my MDE journey, I realized the potential that distance education had to offer. I could pull from my own experiences as an online learner (B.S. and MDE) and connect with the content of my courses.. At the same time, strategically plan how this content can be applied in a corporate training environment. The course content covered every aspect of distance education and gave plenty of opportunity to reflect, apply and imagine. I was excited to be on the cutting edge of such a dynamic field. I was enthused about learning how technology can be used to make teaching and learning more relevant to the digital learner.
MDE Competencies
Now in retrospect, I am sure I made the right decision. My distance education knowledge can be the missing link to that will aim us closer to the departments' mission. The MDE Program has afforded me the opportunity to expand my knowledge base and has stirred my passion for design and coordination. I have acquired the following competencies and am excited about applying them to a successful career in Distance Education.
1. Cost/benefit and cost/effectiveness analysis
2. Develop proposals introducing ne! technology
3. Create learning activities
4. Instructional design and evaluation of program design.
5. Course design using multimedia
6. Leadership and management in DEDesign learner support model
7. Develop and deliver of digital resources
It's been a wonderful experience.
Studying distance education has transformed my life and I am grateful to have earned my MDE online. I am even more excited about the opportunity to influence the lives of others. So, now that I have gain valuable knowledge of distance education, I am ready to apply what I have learned. In a working environment of technology experts, procedures and processes are very systematic and calculated. However, if these technologies are to reach their full potential and be effective, users must be educated and informed. My distance education knowledge can help build and maintain methods to ensure and improve competencies in a corporate environment. My BS in Business Administration, years of working at HE institution and MDE will be the foundation I will build this new and exciting phrase of my career.
